TTN Research Alert: Damo Academy, the research arm of Alibaba Group Holding, has launched its first server-grade central processing unit (CPU), the C930, based on the open-source RISC-V architecture, marking a significant step in the company’s push to enhance its AI capabilities and navigate increasing US restrictions on advanced chip technology.

- The C930, the latest addition to Alibaba’s XuanTie RISC-V processor series, is designed for server-level, high-performance computing and is expected to start shipping to clients in March. The launch was announced at a conference in Beijing on Friday, where Damo Academy highlighted the chip’s ability to support complex AI workloads and cloud applications. The introduction of the C930 also reflects Alibaba’s long-term commitment to open-source chip architectures as an alternative to proprietary solutions dominated by US-based companies such as Intel and Arm.
- Based on the RISC-V architecture, the C930 represents a shift towards a more flexible, customizable computing environment. RISC-V, short for the fifth generation of the Reduced Instruction Set Computer, is an open-source instruction set architecture that allows developers worldwide to build and optimize processors without the licensing constraints imposed by x86 (Intel and AMD) or Arm. This strategic shift is particularly crucial as China accelerates its push for semiconductor independence amid tightening US export controls on high-end chips and manufacturing tools.
- Alibaba has been an active contributor to the RISC-V ecosystem, having previously developed several XuanTie processors, including the C910 in 2019 and the C920 in 2023. At the Beijing event, Damo Academy emphasized its leadership in advancing RISC-V adoption in high-end applications, noting that its XuanTie team has contributed to the development of over 30% of RISC-V high-performance processors globally. This underscores Alibaba’s influence in shaping the trajectory of open-source computing, particularly in China.
- In addition to unveiling the C930, Damo Academy introduced a development roadmap for future chips under the XuanTie series, including the C908X, R908A, and XL200. These upcoming processors will be tailored for AI acceleration, automotive applications, and high-speed interconnect solutions, respectively, further broadening Alibaba’s presence across multiple semiconductor markets.
- The chip launch comes on the heels of Alibaba’s recent announcement of an ambitious investment plan, pledging at least 380 billion yuan (US$52 billion) over the next three years to enhance its AI and cloud computing infrastructure. As China’s largest cloud services provider, Alibaba is intensifying its efforts to meet growing demand for AI-driven applications, spurred in part by the rise of cost-effective, high-performance AI models from Hangzhou-based start-up DeepSeek. This substantial investment underscores the company's determination to maintain its competitive edge in cloud computing while strengthening its technological autonomy.
